Endoscopic Spine Surgery

VIT KOTHEERANURAK, M.D.

Endoscopic spine surgery aims to reduce nerve compression primarily caused by conditions such as herniated discs or spinal stenosis, which many refer to as bone spurs compressing nerves.

Benefits: It is a surgery with small incisions and precise targeting of the affected area.

Limitations: Limited availability of equipment and the need for skilled surgeons to reduce errors and complications.

Indications for surgery: Conditions such as herniated discs in the lumbar or cervical spine, or spinal stenosis in the lumbar spine.

Surgical Procedure: The patient receives anesthesia from an anesthesiologist. The surgeon then makes a small incision, typically 7 millimeters to 1 centimeter, to insert the endoscope and surgical instruments. The surgery generally takes about 30 to 60 minutes per level of the spine.

Hospital Stay: Patients typically stay overnight after surgery and can usually get up and walk immediately afterward.

Recovery: Heavy lifting should be avoided for at least one month.
